Dana Whitlock
Owner, shop open since 2013
Almost everybody who moves to Florida brings a wardrobe that is wrong for it.
Dana Whitlock has run a Florida apparel shop since 2013 - beachwear, linen, sun shirts, hats and sandals, and printed shirts for a family, a boat or a reunion. Most of what she does is telling people who have just arrived what actually works in this climate, which is almost never what they packed. She ships anywhere in the state for people who are not near enough to walk in.

How a first visit usually goesIn this order
You say where you moved from
Ohio and Arizona are two different problems. So is arriving with a boat. Somebody from a cold state owns nothing that breathes; somebody from a dry heat owns light clothes that turn heavy in the humidity. A boat owner needs everything to dry by the afternoon and hold on in the wind.
Fabric before style
What breathes, what dries, what handles salt. How it looks comes after that is settled, not before. Linen and open-weave cotton let the air through and dry on your back. Most polyester holds the heat and the smell. The label is read in the shop, so you do not have to learn it at the beach.
The heat kit
Three or four things that end up being worn constantly. Start there rather than replacing a whole wardrobe in one afternoon. Two linen shirts, one pair of shorts that dries, and sandals that grip. Everything else waits until you know what you actually reach for.
The sun kit
A hat that stays on in wind, and a long-sleeved shirt light enough that you will actually wear it. A brim wide enough to shade your neck, a cord for the boat, and a sun shirt rated for the sun that you can pull on wet. It replaces the cream you forgot to put on.
The cold layer
For restaurants, offices, and any indoor room in this state between June and September. A light cardigan or an overshirt that lives in the car or the bag. The air conditioning in Florida is set for August outside, not for the person sitting under the vent.
Come back in October
The second half of the year asks for different things. Nobody needs all of it in the first week. The mornings turn cool, the sun sits lower, and the boat and the beach days are the best of the year. That is when the second visit happens, and it is a different list.

She buys for the weather rather than for the photograph. Fabric comes first: what breathes, what dries, what survives salt and chlorine, and what falls apart after one summer.
She will tell you not to buy something. A shop that sells somebody the wrong thing gets one sale. A shop that tells them the truth gets the whole family for ten years.
What you wore up north does not work here, and that is not a small thing.

What the shop carriesSix things, chosen for the weather
Beachwear and swim
Swim, cover-ups, and the thing that goes over the top of both for the walk back.
Linen and cotton for the heat
The fabrics that work in August. Synthetics do not, however they are sold to you.
Sun shirts and hats
Sun protection you put on once rather than reapply. Long sleeves are cooler here than bare arms, which surprises nearly everybody.
Sandals and shoes that survive
Everything gets wet here. Leather does not last, and the wrong sole is dangerous on a wet dock.
Custom and printed shirts
For a family, a boat, a reunion or a team. Printed on the premises rather than sent away and waited for.
The cold restaurant layer
Every Floridian owns one. Newcomers find out why in a movie theater in July.
Who it is for
This suits anyone who has just moved to Florida, and anyone whose wardrobe was packed for a northern winter. It suits somebody who burns and has stopped trusting sun cream on its own, and anyone with a boat, a pool or a dock in the picture. It suits a family, a reunion or a team who want printed shirts, and anybody who has never owned a linen shirt and is about to find out why they exist.
Who it is not for
It does not suit somebody looking for one particular designer label, anybody who needs formal wear, suiting or occasion dresses, or wholesale and bulk uniform orders, which are a different business.
Come in before your first Florida summer, not after it.
