Two mechanics at the outboards of a boat on a lift

A boat is easy to buy and expensive to own badly. This is the part where somebody who has already made the mistakes keeps you from making them.

He looks at the boat himself. The man who tells you what he thinks of it is the man who climbed into the engine bay, and he says what he saw rather than what would close the sale.

A center console running over clear water

Cameron Reed has worked around Florida boats for twenty-one years, on the water and in the yard. He helps people buy, sell, keep and look after a boat in a state where the salt, the sun and the storms are harder on a hull than anywhere most newcomers have owned one before. He will tell you when a boat is wrong for what you actually plan to do with it, which is the most useful thing anybody says to a first-time buyer.

He will talk you out of a boat. A hull that needs more than the buyer is ready for becomes somebody's regret and somebody's loss, and he would rather lose the sale than arrange that.

Buying, selling, keeping and looking after a boat in Florida.

What we doSix things, each done by the same person

Buying a boat

Working out what the boat is actually for before looking at any, then finding one that fits it rather than one that looks good at the dock.

Selling a boat

Listed, shown and handled, with the paperwork and the title work done properly so the sale does not come back on you.

Service and repair

Engines, systems, steering and electrics, done by people he has used for years rather than whoever answers first.

Storage and dockage

Finding a slip, a lift or a yard that suits the boat and the way you actually use it, including through hurricane season.

Before you buy

A survey and a sea trial arranged and attended, so somebody who knows what to listen for is standing there when the engine runs.

New to Florida boating

Registration, where you can and cannot go, what the water does to a boat here, and what the first year actually costs you in time.

How a boat gets boughtIn this order

1What the boat is for

Fishing, family, the intracoastal, the open water. Everything after this depends on the answer.

2What to look at

Which boats suit that, which do not, and why - told to you before anybody drives anywhere.

3Seeing it

Looked over in person, engine bay opened, hull looked at properly rather than glanced at.

4The survey and the sea trial

Arranged, attended, and explained afterward in words you can use.

5The paperwork

Title, registration and transfer, handled so nothing surfaces months later.

6After you own it

Where it lives, who services it, and what to do with it when a storm is coming.

Who it is for

This suits people buying their first boat in Florida, and people who owned one somewhere colder who are starting again in salt water. It suits sellers who want the listing, the showings and the title work handled properly. It suits anyone who needs a slip, a lift or a yard in an area they do not know yet, anyone who wants somebody at the survey who is on their side, and owners who would rather the same person looked after the boat every year.

Who it is not for

It does not suit somebody who wants a boat found and bought inside a week, anybody looking for commercial or charter vessel work, or a buyer who would rather skip the survey to save a few days.

Talk to somebody before you buy the boat, not after the first weekend with it.

The words you will hearPlain meanings

SurveyA marine surveyor goes over the boat, hull, deck, systems and engines, and writes up what he finds. It is the inspection, and the insurer will usually want to see it.
Sea trialThe boat is run on the water with the buyer, the seller and the surveyor aboard, so the engines and the handling are seen working, not described.
SlipA berth at a marina where the boat stays in the water, tied to a dock.
LiftA cradle on posts beside a dock that raises the boat out of the water between uses, which is what saves a hull in Florida.
Dry storageA rack or a yard on land where the boat lives between uses and is put in the water when you want it.
Title and registrationThe state paperwork that says who owns the boat and lets it be used on Florida water. It transfers at the sale.
Hurricane planWhere the boat goes and what gets done to it when a storm is named, decided before the season, not the week of.
IntracoastalThe sheltered waterway that runs along the Florida coast inside the barrier islands, where much of a first year on the water is spent.
