Sandbar Barber & Salon

Marco Silva

Owner, cutting in Florida since 2016

Everybody puts this one off. Then it is four months later and you still have not sat in anybody's chair.

Marco Silva has cut hair in Florida since 2016 - barbering on one side of the room, salon on the other. Fades, beard work, color and styling. Most of the new faces through the door are people who moved here months ago and have been driving back to their old town, putting it off, or taking whatever they could get on the day.

Start here

He cuts, and he runs the place. The person who takes the appointment is the person holding the clippers, so nothing gets promised at the desk that cannot be done in the chair.

A first visit takes longer on purpose. What worked on your hair somewhere colder does not always work here, and the humidity is not a small thing.

Finding a barber in a new town is the thing everybody puts off the longest.

How a first visit goesIn this order

1Say what you used to have

Bring a photograph if you have one. Describing a fade out loud has never worked for anybody. A picture of your own head from a good month tells the barber the length on top, where the fade started and how it was finished, and that is three questions answered before the cape goes on.

2He looks at your hair, not the photograph

Thickness, growth pattern, cowlicks, and how gray it actually is rather than how gray you think it is. A cut is drawn on the hair you have. Fine hair, a double crown or a hairline that has moved will change what the picture becomes, and you are told that in the chair rather than finding it out in the mirror at home.

3What Florida does to it

Humidity, salt, chlorine and sun. Hair behaves differently here, and a cut that ignores that grows out badly. Curl comes out in the damp that never showed up north, pool water and the sea dry it, and the sun lifts color. The cut and the products are chosen for that, not for the town you came from.

4The cut

Longer on the first one. The second is quicker, because somebody already knows your head. The first visit is where the guard sizes, the blend line and the length on top get settled and written on your card, so the next barber to pick up the clippers, even if it is the same one, starts from a record and not from memory.

5What to do between visits

Two products, not eight. Which ones, how much, and when to stop. Something to hold it, and something for the heat if your hair needs it. You are shown how much on your own head, because the amount on the label was written for somebody else.

6Book the next one before you leave

A Saturday chair goes early, and the gap between cuts is shorter here than you are used to. A fade is at its best for about two weeks and gone at four. The chair is booked before you are out of the cape, on the day and at the time you already know you can keep.

What we doSix things, both sides of the room

Men's haircuts

Scissor work, clipper work, or both. Told straight if what you are asking for will not sit on your head.

Fades and tapers

Skin, low, mid and high. Done properly rather than approximately, which is the difference you see at three weeks.

Beard work

Shaping, lining and a hot towel, or a straight razor finish if you want one.

Salon cutting and styling

Cut, blow-dry and styling on the salon side of the same room, by people who do that all day rather than as a sideline.

Color and highlights

Gray coverage, lightening, and the correction people need after trying it themselves at the kitchen sink.

Children and first haircuts

Including the ones who have decided in advance that they hate it.

Who it is for

This suits anyone who has just moved and has not found a barber yet, and anyone who wants a fade done properly rather than approximately. It suits beard work rather than a trim with the clippers, and hair that has started behaving differently since the move. It suits color that needs correcting, and a first haircut for a child who has already decided how it is going to go.

Who it is not for

It does not suit somebody who wants it done in ten minutes on the way to something else, anybody after extensions, wigs or specialist hair replacement, or mobile and at-home appointments, which are a different business.

Book the first one on a weekday. Saturdays fill up two weeks out.

The words you will hearPlain meanings

FadeHair cut so it goes from skin or very short at the bottom to longer at the top with no line anywhere. Low, mid or high says where on the head the change starts.
TaperThe sides and back shortened toward the neck and ears, but never down to the skin. Cleaner than a fade and slower to grow out.
Line-upThe hairline at the forehead, the temples and the neck cut to a sharp edge with the trimmer. It is the part that makes a cut look new for a week and then does not.
Scissor over combThe hair lifted with a comb and cut with scissors instead of clippers. Softer than a clipper cut, and the way longer sides are shaped.
TexturizingCutting into the hair so it sits with less weight and more movement, rather than in a solid shape. What stops thick hair standing up in the heat.
BalayageColor painted onto the hair by hand rather than in foils, lighter toward the ends. It grows out without a hard line, so it needs the chair less often.
TonerA light color put on after lightening to take the yellow or the orange out. It is the step people skip at the kitchen sink.
Gray blendingColor that softens the gray rather than covering it, so the change is not obvious and the regrowth does not show as a line.
